M3gan (2022)

M3gan is M3h.

(I just wanted to write that. It’s actually pretty good.)

Solid writing, but the directorial execution didn’t deliver. The big emotional moment between the two protagonists is rushed and there’s a twist most people are missing because it’s basically thrown away as a one-liner. We needed maybe 3 additional minutes of runtime and I guess that was just too much to ask of the director/editor. Doesn’t get in the way of the suspense or action, but if you’re a story person it *will* bug you.

Way less ableist than one of Cooper’s last films, Malignant (2021). I hated that one and wrote a short review (contains spoilers). Ronny Chieng is my favorite part about M3gan and it was nice to see him get to play a serious character whose humor comes from cruelty and hubris.

Finally, there are some brutal moments of gore that are cleverly choreographed and well-acted. Nothing I would consider too extreme, but squeamish folks might need to cover their eyes a few times. M3gan is a fun watch and I look forward to the sequel.
